Accredited Courses

ACA Accredited Course Finder

Courses of study that meet ACA accreditation standards must have a primary focus on counselling. Registered counsellors and psychotherapists are required to be able to perform significant in depth therapeutic work with their clients using various therapeutic approaches. These skills must extend beyond theoretical knowledge and be firmly grounded in evidence-based practices.

Whilst there are numerous training providers delivering courses in counselling, ACA lists only those courses that meet government regulator requirements Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and/ or Tertiary Education Quality Standards Agency (TEQSA) and have attained ACA Accredited Course status. The ACA Accredited Course Finder lists all ACA accredited courses at Diploma, Bachelor and Masters degree levels.

STUDY OPTIONS

Deciding to pursue a career in counselling or psychotherapy? It can be difficult to choose from the array of courses available. Counselling and psychotherapy are not regulated professions by the government - they are self-regulated professions through peak bodies such as the ACA. This means that there is no specific courses required for recognition as a professional in this field.

However, it is important to select a course that not only equips you with the necessary skills to practice as a counsellor or psychotherapist but also enables you to become a registered practitioner. Registration plays a significant role in your professional recognition once you’ve completed your training.

ACA’s primary mission is to ensure the registration of counsellors and psychotherapists, providing the public access to highly trained professionals who adhere to stringent accountability and self-regulation standards.

If you’re uncertain about training as a counsellor or psychotherapist, consulting the ACA Accredited Course Finder is essential to verify whether the training aligns with the requirements for registration.

Our Counsellor Toolkit 'Becoming a Counsellor - Things to Know Before Study' outlines the key considerations before beginning study.

Benefits of Registration

Registration as a counsellor or psychotherapist with ACA demonstrates your commitment to professionalism, ethics, and professional development, which can benefit both you and the clients you serve.

Professional Recognition

ACA registration signifies that you meet certain standards of education, training, and ethical practice in counselling. This recognition can enhance your credibility and trustworthiness in the eyes of clients, employers, and other professionals in the field.

Access to Resources

ACA counsellors have access to a range of resources, including professional development opportunities, networking events, and research updates. These resources can help you stay informed about best practices in counselling and continue to develop your skills throughout your career.

Ethical Guidelines

ACA registration requires adherence to a code of ethics and professional conduct, which helps to ensure that counsellors maintain high standards of integrity and professionalism in their practice. This can help protect clients from potential harm and maintain the reputation of the counseling profession.

Referral Network

Being registered with ACA may increase your visibility within the counselling community and make it easier for potential clients or employers to find you. ACA registration also provides opportunities for networking with other counsellors, which can lead to referrals and collaborations.
